MojoAuth vs Clerk: drop-in React UI versus API-first flexibility

Clerk dominates the modern React developer mindshare with polished drop-in components. MojoAuth is API-first with broader language and platform reach. This comparison covers when each is the better pick for consumer apps.

TL;DR verdict

Choose Clerk when your stack is React or Next.js and you want the most polished drop-in auth UI in the market. Choose MojoAuth when you need broader SDK reach (web, mobile, headless), more passwordless channels such as WhatsApp OTP, or a larger free tier (25,000 MAU). For React-first product teams, Clerk is the fastest path to a working sign-in. For everyone else, MojoAuth offers more flexibility at a similar or lower price.

When to choose MojoAuth

Your stack is not React-centric.

Clerk's strength is the React component library. If you build with Vue, Angular, Svelte, native iOS/Android, or non-browser surfaces (CLI, agents, MCP servers), you give up that strength immediately and end up with the headless SDK. MojoAuth is headless-first across the board.

You want a larger free tier.

MojoAuth is free up to 25,000 MAU. Business Pro starts at $120/month and is $200/month at 50,000 MAU and $380/month at 100,000 MAU, with passwordless methods included rather than sold as add-ons.

You want WhatsApp OTP as a native channel.

Clerk does not ship WhatsApp OTP. For consumer apps in markets where WhatsApp is the dominant messaging platform, this is a real conversion lever MojoAuth has and Clerk does not.

When to choose Clerk

Your app is React or Next.js.

Clerk's React components are the best in the market by a wide margin. `<SignIn/>`, `<SignUp/>`, `<UserButton/>`, and `<OrganizationSwitcher/>` work without configuration and feel native to a modern React app. Time to first working sign-in is under 5 minutes.

You want a polished hosted UI without custom CSS.

Clerk's default UI ships looking like a modern consumer SaaS sign-in. MojoAuth's hosted UI is functional but lighter on default polish; deeper customization is expected.

You are building B2B SaaS.

Clerk's B2B SaaS plan is purpose-built for multi-tenant SaaS with organizations, roles, invitations, and the admin UI to manage them. MojoAuth focuses on consumer login.

Pricing breakdown

Pricing breakdown: MojoAuth versus Clerk by MAU tier

10,000 MAUsFree$25/mo
50,000 MAUs$200/mo~$825/mo ($25 + 40,000 × $0.02)
100,000 MAUs$380/mo~$1,825/mo ($25 + 90,000 × $0.02)

MojoAuth is free up to 25,000 MAU. Above that, MojoAuth's published Business Pro tiers come in lower than Clerk's per-MAU rate. Clerk figures are estimates from its public Pro pricing; confirm current pricing with each vendor.

Developer experience

Email OTP with MojoAuth

javascript
import { MojoAuth } from "@mojoauth/server-sdk";

const mojo = new MojoAuth({ apiKey: process.env.MOJOAUTH_API_KEY });

await mojo.email.sendOtp({ email: "user@example.com" });
const { user, accessToken } = await mojo.email.verifyOtp({
  email: "user@example.com",
  otp: req.body.otp,
});

Drop-in SignIn with Clerk (React)

javascript
import { SignIn } from "@clerk/nextjs";

export default function Page() {
  return <SignIn routing="path" path="/sign-in" />;
}

// in middleware.ts
import { clerkMiddleware } from "@clerk/nextjs/server";
export default clerkMiddleware();

The Clerk example is two files for a working multi-method sign-in flow with hosted UI. That is genuinely impressive and not something MojoAuth (or any other vendor) matches for React. The trade-off is that the moment you step outside React, the productivity advantage disappears.

Security and compliance

MojoAuth

  • SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified
  • FIDO2/WebAuthn compliant passkeys
  • HIPAA-ready (BAA on Enterprise)

Clerk

  • SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001
  • WebAuthn / passkey support
  • HIPAA BAA on enterprise plans

Migration from Clerk

Most migrations complete in 2–3 weeks. The slower part is replacing embedded components with either MojoAuth's hosted UI or a custom UI on top of the headless SDK.

  1. Week 1: Export users via Clerk's Backend API. Import with bcrypt hashes into MojoAuth. Stand up parallel auth path.
  2. Week 2: Replace `<SignIn/>` components with MojoAuth UI or build custom. Shift traffic via feature flag, monitor, decommission Clerk.
